A “disciple” is a follower of Jesus—a person who is fully committed to Jesus Christ as Lord of their lives. We become disciples when we accept the salvation God offers in Jesus, but then the process of growing into what we are takes a lifetime. This growth happens through the transforming power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The Holy Spirit uses many means or channels through which to transform our lives and make us more like Jesus. These include Bible study, prayer, the church, living out our faith in the world, sharing our faith, and spiritual disciplines like fasting, worship, silence, giving, etc. Through channels of growth like these, the Spirit is able to produce in us his fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).
The three classes described in this section—Foundations, Growing in Christ, and Living in Christ—will give you a basic understanding of the Christian faith and how the Spirit of God goes about shaping and molding us into what he wants us to be. We encourage your participation in these classes and pray that they will be a great blessing to you on your Christian journey.
